May 16, 2017, Shanghai - Specialty chemicals company LANXESS releases its comprehensive offerings of green solutions for the plastics industry at the Chinaplas 2017 during May 16-19 in Guangzhou. The Inorganic Pigments business unit (IPG) will present a wide color range for different plastics applications including yellow, black, green and brown iron oxide pigments marketed under the brands Bayferrox® and Colortherm®, to enable quality life by bringing added-value to the plastics and downstream industries.

A new benchmark of sustainability

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Petrochem and Chemical Industry Development Plan (2016-2020) in 2016, stressing the importance of upgrading and transforming traditional chemical industry, and specifying transformation requirements on the industry for the R&D and wide application of environmentally friendly and integrated cleaner production techniques. LANXESS is one step ahead of this by setting a new benchmark of sustainability on a global scale with the new production site in Ningbo.

It is noticeable that the company’s plans are nothing but consistent with these green development requirements in transformation and upgrading of the chemical industry. At its inorganic pigments plant in Ningbo, LANXESS will for the first time employ a newly developed production process for red iron oxide pigments in which improved water treatment and waste gas purification contribute to a high level of environmental compatibility. Optimizations in the production process are also designed to significantly reduce the quantities of nitrogen oxides generated. Emissions of the greenhouse gas N2O (nitrous oxide) will almost completely be converted by an efficient post treatment into nitrogen, oxygen and water – all naturally occurring substances. Efficient wastewater treatment allows the processed water to be completely cleaned. 80 percent water can be recycled back into production.

“LANXESS will work with our customers and create a better and greener future for the community through new technologies and sustainable solutions,” says Daniel Huang, head of IPG in the Asia-Pacific region. “As the leading producer of iron oxide pigments, we continuously strive to improve even the best portfolio – for example by conquering a new color spaces of bright red shades for our customers, worldwide. In Ningbo, we not only built a new production plant for red pigments, but we also developed a whole new production process for our highly saturated New Red pigments: the Ningbo Process. It stands out due to its improved efficiency and, at the same time, sets a new benchmark of sustainability on a global scale,” Daniel commented.

Ningbo Process introduces new color spaces to the world

A key highlight during this year’s show will be the innovative Bayferrox® New Red pigments range that is based on the Ningbo Process, which offers not only special advantages in terms of sustainability and pigment quality but also red pigments in a previously unattainable color space. Compared to all other iron oxides on the market, the innovative and particularly sustainable Ningbo process makes it possible to manufacture the brightest and most yellow-toned red pigments.

LANXESS Inorganic Pigments represents a consistent combination of environmental responsibility, efficiency and quality.  In line with these objectives and based on its more than 90 years of experience, LANXESS has once again set a milestone in the production of synthetic iron oxide pigments. LANXESS will be the only company in the world to cover the full spectrum of yellow-shaded reds with its New Red pigments, in addition to the color space of classic Penniman and Copperas pigment types.

Special pigments for the coloring of plastics

China is the world’s biggest plastics manufacturing and consumption single market. In all plastics application markets, LANXESS provides a wide range of inorganic pigments products that meet the highest demands. For example, artificial turf requires extremely accurate coloring to appear exactly the same as natural turf. Colortherm® products are popular coloring pigments for use in artificial turf, of which Colortherm® Yellow 20 is often used with organic blue pigments to color artificial turf fibers and protect them from UV rays. Colortherm® iron oxide pigments are not only cost-effective but also light-resistant and weather-resistant so that artificial turf‘s color won’t fade during the whole life cycle.

CHINAPLAS has witnessed and grown with China’s plastics and rubber industries for over 30 years. It is the biggest plastics and rubber trade fair in Asia.

LANXESS Colortherm® inorganic pigments also have been proven effective in coloring wood plastic composites and provide more color choices for these composites such as Colortherm® Yellow 3950 and Colortherm® Green GN. These products exhibit good dispersibility, even in processes which have short dwell times and relatively low shear forces. They are easy to break down and distribute to reach its final tinting strength quickly. Other advantages include their lightfastness and weather-resistance.

LANXESS, with all its various business fields, is a strong partner for sustainability. Its production processes are designed to conserve resources and preserve the environment – and to be safe and sustainable. All production facilities are certified to DIN ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and audited regularly. State-of-the-art waste gas and wastewater treatment facilities at the respective sites help to avoid emissions almost entirely.
