LANXESS presents sustainable color solutions for China’s plastics industry

LANXESS at Chinaplas 2014 April 23-26, Booth Number: D01, Hall N1

Shanghai, April 1, 2014 - Specialty chemicals company LANXESS, one of the world’s leading producers of iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments, will present its sustainable solutions for the plastics industry at the upcoming Chinaplas 2014, which takes place at the Shanghai New International Expo Center from April 23 to 26.

Inorganic pigments from LANXESS are characterized by their unmatched color consistency, the high color strength, the unmatched light-fastness and their weather-resistance. LANXESS’ world recognized Bayferrox and Colortherm pigments are the first choice in all temperature demanding applications, including the plastics industry. Moreover, inorganic pigments from LANXESS are produced according to the highest environmental standards and therefore offer sustainable solutions for all applications.

China has become the world’s single largest plastics manufacturing and consuming market. The pigments used for coloring plastics must satisfy a number of requirements such as good dispersibility, tinting strength and high thermal stability.

”LANXESS’ Colortherm pigments could perfectly serve customers’ needs for excellent light-fastness, weather stability and very high tinting strength. At the same time, our broad product range enables the specialty chemicals group to accommodate the latest color trends in the plastics industry,” said Rafael Suchan, Vice President for the Inorganic Pigments business unit in Asia Pacific.

LANXESS will showcase innovative premium products like the highly saturated New Red pigments at the show. These yellowish-shaded red iron oxides produced by a new Penniman Red process complement LANXESS’ existing product range and strengthen LANXESS’ position to serve the growing markets in China and globally.

Alongside the red shades, LANXESS will also showcase the colors yellow, black and brown and will exhibit its sustainable, innovative solutions and present its advanced, environmental friendly production processes.

Among the hightlights, Colortherm® Black 303T, a synthetic black manganese ferrite, displays outstanding light-fastness, tinting strength, color consistency as well as weather stability. Since it is modified with a certain amount of manganese oxide, it displays an extreme heat stability and fulfills the higher requirements necessary in the paint and coatings industry.

Other products on show include Colortherm® Yellow 10, Colortherm® Yellow 3950 and Colortherm® Green GN-M. These grades feature good dispersibility, even in processes which have short dwell times and relatively low shear forces. They are easy to break down and distribute to reach its final tinting strength quickly. These products do not migrate and are very light-fast and weather-stable.

Colortherm® Yellow 10  is a synthetic, yellow iron oxide pigment with improved heat stability through an additional inorganic surface treatment and is developed particularly for applications where high heat stability is required, such as powder coatings and coil coatings.

Colortherm® Green GN-M is a synthetic, micronized chromium oxide green pigment. It has very low chrome (VI) content.

New Red Iron Oxide Pigments Plant in China
LANXESS is building a high-tech facility for the production of premium iron oxide red pigments in Ningbo, China, using the Penniman process optimized by the company to ensure high environmental compatibility by optimizing water treatment and waste gas cleaning. The plant, characterized by its particularly high energy efficiency, is designed to meet and exceed the latest environmental standards.

The plant will initially have an annual capacity of 25,000 metric tons.

“With this plant we will be the first iron oxide pigments manufacturer that is able to produce these bright yellowish-shade red pigments in an environmentally-friendly and consistent way,” said Suchan.

LANXESS’ high-performance pigments, with their tight tolerances in color shade and tinting strength, make color reproduction when formulating master batches faster, easier, more reliable and energy efficient; shading work is reduced to a minimum. These industry leading characteristics represent decisive advantages for LANXESS’ customers in the plastics industry.

With an annual capacity of more than 350,000 metric tons, the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments (IPG) business unit is one of the world's leading manufacturers of iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments. The heart of global production is located in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany. The business unit has close to 1,500 employees and is part of LANXESS’ Performance Chemicals segment.

LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 9.1 billion in 2012 and currently around 17,400 employees in 31 countries. The company is at present represented at 50 production sites worldwide.  The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals. LANXESS is a member of the leading sustainable indices Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World and FTSE4Good as well as the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).
