November 15, 2013, Shanghai – Specialty chemicals group LANXESS will present its sustainable solutions for the paint and coatings industry at the upcoming ChinaCoat 2013. LANXESS business units Inorganic Pigments (IPG) and Material Protection Products (MPP) will attend the show at Shanghai New International Expo Center from November 20th  to 22nd , presenting their comprehensive and innovative product portofolios.

The paint and coatings market is very important for LANXESS as it is one of the fastest growing applications for LANXESS’ specialty products. The ongoing urbanization in China creates a growing demand for coatings, making China  the world’s largest producer and consumer of  paints.

Highlights from LANXESS Inorganic Pigments

High-quality pigments from LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit offer not only outstanding light fastness, high tinting strength, color consistency and weather stability but also an unmatched dispersibility.

LANXESS will feature its full range of products under the brand names Bayferrox® and Colortherm®. As a highlight of this year’s show, the Inorganic Pigments business unit will introduce innovative premium products like the New Red pigments produced by the Penniman Red process. These highly saturated red iron oxide pigments complement LANXESS’ existing product range and strengthen LANXESS’ position to serve the growing local markets in China and globally.

LANXESS is building a high-tech facility for the production of New Red iron oxide pigments in Ningbo on China’s east coast with a designed annual capacity of 25,000 metric tons. The EUR 55 million project is designed to meet the latest environmental standards and will manufacture high quality iron oxide red pigments using state-of-the-art technology for a truly sustainable Penniman Red production process. LANXESS will market New Red pigments globally under the well-known brand Bayferrox®.

“We apply the same level of highest environmental standards globally in the production of our inorganic pigments. This, of course, is also true for our investment in Ningbo. As the world’s leading manufacturer of synthetic iron oxide pigments, LANXESS is committed to offering sustainable solutions for all applications, including our customers in the paint and coatings industry” says Joerg Hellwig, Head of LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit.

Alongside the red shades, LANXESS will also showcase the whole color  range of iron oxide pigments, and will exhibit its sustainable, innovative solutions, and present its advanced, environmental friendly production processes.

Among them, Bayferrox® 303T, a synthetic black manganese ferrite, differs from conventional black iron oxides in its low flocculation behavior. Since it is modified with a certain amount of manganese oxide, it displays an extreme heat stability and is heat stable well above 500°C. The grade belongs to the product range of High Performance Special Pigments and fulfills the higher requirements necessary in the paint and coatings industry.

Bayferrox® 645 T is a synthetic reddish brown manganese ferrite. it also displays an extreme heat stability and fulfills the higher requirements necessary in the paint and coatings industry.

Colortherm® Yellow 10, a synthetic, yellow iron oxide pigment, is an iron oxide yellow pigment with improved heat stability. It achieves its high heat stability through an additional inorganic surface treatment and is developed particularly for applications where high heat stability is required, such as powder coatings and coil coatings. The product exhibits good dispersibility, even in processes which have short processing times and relatively low sheer forces. The product is easy to break down and distribute to reach its final tinting strength quickly. This grade does not migrate and is very light fast and weather stable.

“China is by far the single largest market for iron oxide pigments with the rapid urbanization continuing to support the growth of the coatings industry in the long-run,” says Wolfgang Oehlert, Vice President for the Inorganic Pigments business Unit in Asia Pacific and Global Head of Technical Operations for LANXESS Inorganic Pigments. “LANXESS’ environmentally friendly iron oxide pigments offer the right solution for many of our customers’ applications and in addition, our technical support can offer tailor-made solutions for almost all applications.”, Oehlert added.

In conjunction with the ChinaCoat, LANXESS will host its first Pigments Symposium under the topic “Sustainable Technology for a Clean Environment” at the Shanghai Intercontinental Expo Hotel. The day-long conference on the 22nd of November will be focused on the sustainable production of inorganic pigments as well as global trends and development in the coatings and pigments industries. LANXESS will also inform about a major step forward in Penniman Red production technology and of the important innovations we have recently developed in this field. Roughly 150 participants from the industry, government, academia, media and associations will gather with LANXESS executives and experts.
