Technical oxides for safer braking

Bayoxide® is applied in brake linings primarily to define the coefficient of friction

The manufacture of brake linings involves the use of binders, rubber, glass fiber and metal, as well as chromium oxide, iron oxide and titanium dioxide.
Due to their special technical properties iron and chromium oxide pigments are used to define a specific coefficient of friction.

Chromium oxide has a higher intrinsic hardness than other metal oxides and is therefore added to the brake lining mixes for disc and drum brakes, primarily to increase the coefficient of friction. LANXESS has developed Bayoxide® C GN-B for this application. In addition to its technical properties, this chromium oxide pigment is green in color and can be used for coloring of the brake linings.

Softer iron oxides are also used to set a specific coefficient of friction and for black coloring. Also for this application, LANXESS has special inorganic pigments. Both Bayoxide® E BL 31 and Bayoxide® E BL 32 are black iron oxide pigments.

The Global Competence Center Specialties will gladly answer individual customer inquiries with respect to this field of application or provide further information about LANXESS pigments.
