Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, Cascais, Portugal

Art history in three dimensions.

The museum provides a most appropriate home for the collection of works by the internationally distinguished artist Paula Rego, who lived in Estoril for many years. The building was designed in keeping with the artist’s own wishes, and it was Paula Rego herself who selected the architect.
The Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, considered one of the most prominent representatives of the Escola do Porto, designed a structure that meets all the technical and architectural requirements of a museum without sacrificing a friendly atmosphere.
Two pyramid-shaped buildings of equal size, made of red concrete coloured with Bayferrox® pigments, are harmoniously integrated in the surrounding landscape. Inside, interconnected rooms are grouped around a higher, central exhibition space.
